"Castalia"  -2018

Greek mythology states that Castalia was the name of the legendary fountain at Delphi, said to inspire genius simply from proximity.  However, in this piece I am not referring directly to Castalia's greek origins but rather its use in the famous literature of Hermann Hesse and his masterwork titled, "The Glass Bead Game".   In the book the glass bead game was an intellectual game designed to enlighten children through its use of rules that involved mathematics, art, self reflection, conflict resolution, music, and culture.  In the story, Castalia was the name of the fictional province in where young students would be sent to study the game in the pursuit of individual enlightenment.

"Zero:1"  -2019

The current and future language of the world is not English, Chinese, French, or Spanish.  It's Binary.  The language of ones and zeros is the root of all technology used today.  Where Zero represents "off" (or no power) and One refers to "on", digital transistors and processing units are able to speak to each other and give us the digital infrastructure we depend on.  "Zero:1" was a play on this strange universal constant of dichotomy.  Light:Shadow, Quantum:Galactic, Hot:Cold, Male:Female, and the Yin:Yang are are examples of this fundamental principle.

"Neptune Rising" -2019

In this piece I wanted to create a glimpse into the Abyss.  What is seen is my abstract interpretation of the planet Neptune and its thin icy ring existing at the boundary of the solar system.  Cold and mysterious is holds many secrets that we have yet to discover.  One of which is how something so cold (-214 degrees Celsius) can still be atmospherically active and have wind speeds that exceed 2,200 km/h.  The Galaxy is vast and here in our own little corner, we are allowed a glimpse of the enigma that is our Universe.

"The Endowment" -2019

I spend a great deal of time thinking about the future of Humanity.  I also find myself fantasizing about if there has been or are other Civilizations that have overcome the inherent hurdles associated with sentience.  In this piece, "The Endowment", I wanted to visually conceptualize, as an abstraction, what I thought a gift from an enlightened species may appear as.  Given that such a gift might symbolizes the wisdom needed to achieve our maximum potential, I wanted this piece to have visual value while not being pretentious or flashy.  I was trying to create something with power but also it needed to have an ethereal quality to it.  I used a soft but bright pallet, highly diffused light play, and took a chance with the subtle gold gradient.

"Mote of Desolation" -2019

A mote is a tiny spec or particle.  In many ancient word of mouth stories, Motes are referred to as tiny specs of energy containing enchanted properties.  For this piece I wanted to use the color pallet of the most highly sought after elements in the timeworn and empty desert regions.  Water and Gold.  I attempted to convey the "magical" essence of what I think a Mote would appear as to those ancient desert travelers seeking the riches of Gold and life sustaining Water.

"Herald of Sentience"  -2018

A Herald is the deliverer of information.  Sentience refers to the ability to understand that You are a unique creature and with your own independent thoughts.  Thus the "Herald of Sentience" is a messenger who brings with him/her the knowledge of self-knowing.

"Morvarid"  -2018

Morvarid is Persian for "Pearl".  In Persian mythology, a pearl is created only when a rainbow arcs across the Heavens and touches the Earth after a large thunderstorm.  In this piece I tried my hand at creating a physiological Illusion, wherein that the eye(s) are unable to naturally stay focused on one point at a time - and when attempted to do otherwise, causes distortions in the viewers depth of field.

"Smaragdos"  -2018

Smaragdos is Greek for the "Green Gem", often representing the rare and precious gemstone Emerald.  Modern pseudoscience describes the gem as something that inspires, represents infinite patience, embodies unity, compassion and unconditional love.  One thing for certain is that if found, a high quality Emerald will point to some very good fortune.  The Irish have long held the claim of a relationship between luck and the color green.  Perhaps there is something to that after all.

"Digital Dhahab" -2017

Dhahab is Arabic for "gold".  Gold was highly prized by all ancient peoples.  It is one of the heaviest non-radioactive elements and because of Gold's amazing malleability its use in art can be traced back nearly ten thousand years.  I've always been fascinated by how Gold can only be forged from the death throes of an exploding star and so in this piece I tip my hat to the most beautiful of metals.

"Trans." -2019

In this piece I wanted to showcase the fluidity of Gender and Sexuality.  The lines between masculine and feminine seem clear but I wanted to be sure the work still lacked definition.  Instead what I have tried to create was an honest representation of how many people feel about their personal identity, specifically gender.  There is a lot of sexual symbolism present in this image.  I won't lie, it was rather fun to create.

"Sakkaku" -2018

The term Sakkaku is Japanese for Optical Illusion.  Op Art (short for "Optical Art") was a movement that started in the 1960's.  It was born from the visually mesmerizing works of both Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely.  This piece is a modern interpretation of their original black and white works.

"21 grams" -2019

The weight of a soul as proposed by MacDougall's early 20th century experiment.  It was his belief that the soul must have mass and he devised an experiment to weigh the loss of mass of a person at the moment of death.  While it's never been successfully repeated MacDougall's original experiment concluded that the mass of a soul was close to 21 grams.

Hathor was an ancient Egyptian Goddess and Sky Deity.  She was often revered as one of the few celestials to take on the role of "The Eye of Ra".  Hathor was attributed to love, beauty, motherhood, and joy.  This piece presents the truth that not all tears are born from sadness.

"Farcaster"  -2018

The term "Farcaster" derives from the Hugo award winning fictional series written by Dan Simmons.  In the novels, Farcasters are a means in which people are able to travel through space and time covering impossibly large distances in seconds.  These gates or portals allow for an unprecedented exploration of the known fictional Universe.  Crypto archaeologists have often argued that here on Earth there once existed gates such as the Farcasters Simmons had written about.  Most arguments are speculative but do point out some very intriguing mysteries.  Examples of such would be the "The Gate of the Gods" in Peru and the "Gate of the Sun" in Bolivia.  These so called gates are intricately carved doors that have no apparent entrance or exit.  Given the time period of creation it seems quite a enigma that ancient people, using bone and stone tools, would spend so much time and energy carving into some of the hardest rock on the planet to construct a door to nothing.

"Sangreal" -2016

The Holy Chalice has been represented in countless ways over the millenia.  Some depicting the sacred cup as a golden goblet, others as a benign wooden cup.  So much history and mystique surrounds the Holy Grail, its true appearance and origins are still to this day shrouded in mystery.   Simply garnished and with soft depth, I tried to capture what the mystic cup truly represents.  A holy spirit, devoid of solidity but present in subtle beauty.

"Red Shift"  -2018

In both astrophysics and quantum mechanics there is a principle known as Red Shift.  It is a perception that correlates to the well know doppler effect.  If an object is moving towards or away from one's perspective the sound/pitch of that object is altered depending on its velocity and direction - also known as the doppler effect.  Red Shift specifically correlates to objects moving away from a viewer at a high enough velocity where the light being emitted from the object shifts into a more red hue.  Objects and non-objects traveling in the opposite direction - at extreme speeds - will have a red shift.  In this piece I had been thinking about relationships that have undergone similar phenomena.

"Lucent in tenebris" -2019

Lucent in tenebris is French and the motto of the very old Moran and Morin clans.  It's intended meaning is, "They Shine in Darkness".  In this piece, I took inspiration from the Morin family crest.  I used the yellows and black that make up the crest and tried to symbolize the stars of virtue and piety as the cosmic scape being reflected from the unseen field.  I wanted this piece to invoke a sense of observing a celestial beacon within the timeless void.

"Echo Chamber"  -2019

There are several uses for the term 'Echo Chamber' currently used in today's lexicon.  In this piece I was thinking more about the adverse effects of social algorithms and peoples natural state of naivete.  When we experience the world digitally, through selected channels, we inevitably find that the information we observe has been preselected based on our own individual notions and beliefs.  At first glance this seems helpful, however what concludes is that each person becomes shielded from external ideas, new information, other social groups, and opposing beliefs.  The Echo Chamber is the place where one's reality is, "...reinforced through repetition of a closed system that does not allow for the free movement of alternative or competing ideas or concepts."

"Ixchel"  -2017

Ixchel is Mayan for "The Rainbow Lady" or the Goddess of Earth, Moon, and medicine.  She was among the most powerful and influential deities of the ancient Maya and celebrated for her healing powers.  Here I used the entire spectrum of visible color geometrically portrayed and then refracted to represent the physical light distortion in a droplet of water.  In the middle is a small lotus-like mandala that's found in many Mayan textile patterns.  It also acts as a small but beautiful anchor for the entire piece.

"Aion" - 2018

The time represented by Aion is unbounded.  The Greek deity of cyclic time, Aion was the counterpart to Chronos and his empirical time of past, present, and future.  Aion has been often represented by a simple ring, the infinity loop, a ouroboros, or a cosmically unbound sphere.  This work represents my visual interpretation of Aion and 'his' empyreal role amongst the greater Pantheon.

"Nucleon"  -2018

In quantum physics a Nucleon can be used as a term to describe both Protons and Neutrons.  Inside nucleons are quarks, the smallest and most fundamental particles known to man.  These incomprehensible bits of space and matter seem to defy logic and when observed reveal some incredible mysteries regarding the fabric of space-time itself.  In this piece(s) I wanted to convey both the secret nature and simplistic beauty of the particles that make up the Universe as we experience it.

"Lazurite"  -2018

This work was born from the meditations of the winter solstice and the complex emotions infused into its concept.  At first glance it represents beauty, natural patterns, pureness, things to come, and conclusion.  Nonetheless, with further thought we uncover that the winter solstice also represents a time of deep contemplation and sometimes the foreboding of the unknown.  What awaits just outside the safety of the light and within the abyss?

"White Raven"  -2018

In the oral culture of the Mandan, an old Native American tribe from the central US, the White Raven was said to pose as an omen.  The observed passage of the White Raven in the distant future would herald a grim and bitter end to the World.  I think the Mandan people saw the color of the Raven as an interesting play on a "Pure Creature" bearing the darkest news.  This is not entirely unlike the notion of a holy Archangel being a harbinger of death.  There is something interesting about humans interest in defined and abstract contrasts.  We inherently seek them out and if we can't find them we create them.
